The Espace Van Gogh, located in the heart of Arles, is an iconic site that celebrates the history and legacy of the artist Vincent van Gogh. This cultural space occupies the buildings and gardens of the former HĂŽtel-Dieu, a hospital where the artist was treated after injuring his ear in December 1888.

Today, the Espace Van Gogh is a dynamic cultural center that pays tribute to the artist while hosting various exhibitions, artistic events, and activities centered on the culture of Arles.

A hospital turned icon

Built in the 16th century, the HĂŽtel-Dieu originally served as a hospital for the people of Arles. In 1888, after the incident with his ear, Vincent van Gogh was admitted here and spent several weeks recovering. During his stay, he was particularly inspired by the courtyard gardens, which he immortalized in several famous paintings, such as "The Garden of the Hospital in Arles."

The hospital ceased its medical functions in 1974 and was later restored to become a cultural space. The renovation recreated the gardens as they appeared in Van Gogh’s works, making the site both historically accurate and vibrant for visitors.

A cultural and artistic center

The Espace Van Gogh today hosts:

  • Temporary exhibitions: Including works from the Rencontres d’Arles photography festival, contemporary artists, and exhibitions linked to the region’s cultural heritage.
  • Cultural events: Concerts, conferences, and workshops open to the public.
  • Libraries: A renowned media library praised for its high-quality library and educational initiatives.
  • Shops and cafĂ©s: To extend the visit in a warm and inviting atmosphere.
  • The gardens, arranged with colorful flowers and aromatic plants, provide an inspiring place to relax and immerse oneself in Van Gogh’s pictorial universe.

Van Gogh’s legacy in Arles

Vincent van Gogh spent just over a year in Arles between February 1888 and May 1889, a period during which he created more than 300 works, including some of his most famous pieces, such as "Starry Night Over the RhĂŽne”," The Sunflowers," and "The Night CafĂ©." The Espace Van Gogh invites visitors to discover this prolific period of the artist while delving into the history of Arles, a city that continues to captivate with its artistic and cultural heritage.
