Vincent van Gogh Foundation Arles (Fondation Vincent van Gogh in French), initially created by Yolande Clergue (1926-2024) as an "Association pour la Création de la Fondation" in 1983, was intended to celebrate Van Gogh's time in Arles (1888-1889), an essential period in his artistic career.
The Fondation which can be visited today - founded by Maja Hoffmann - was inaugurated in April 2014, pays tribute to the work of Vincent van Gogh while exploring his influence on contemporary art.
Mission of the Vincent van Gogh Foundation in Arles
The Foundation's main mission is to serve as a reference point for the life and work of Van Gogh, in the city where he produced some of the defining works of his artistic career. It also invites contemporary artists to express their connection with Van Gogh through their own creations, establishing a fertile dialogue between the artistic past and present.
